How to Make Horchata
Ingredients
- 1 cup long-grain white rice
- 4 cups water
- 1 cup milk (optional for creaminess)
- 1/2 cup sugar (adjust to taste)
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon (account for more for garnish)
- Ice cubes (for serving)
Steps
- Rinse the Rice
- Soak the Rice
Combine the rice with 4 cups of water in a bowl or blender.
Let it soak for at least 4 hours (or overnight) for better flavor.
- Blend the Mixture
After soaking, pour the rice and water into a blender until the rice is broken down but not completely smooth (1–2 minutes).
- Strain the Liquid
Use a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth to separate the liquid from the rice solids.
- Add Flavor
Mix the strained liquid with 1 cup of milk (optional), sugar, vanilla extract, and ground cinnamon.
- Chill and Serve
