About Sofia
Sofia Coppola was pretty much born into Hollywood royalty — but she carved her own artistic path. Daughter of legendary director Francis Ford Coppola (The Godfather, Apocalypse Now) and artist Eleanor Coppola, Sofia grew up on film sets, even making a cameo as a baby in The Godfather. Her grandfather, Carmine Coppola, was an Oscar-winning composer, making cinema practically a family language.
Her official start in filmmaking came with Lick the Star (1998), a short film that set the tone for her ethereal, introspective style. She made her feature debut with The Virgin Suicides (1999), a haunting, visually mesmerizing tale that quickly marked her as a director to watch. Since then, she’s crafted a unique filmography, telling intimate stories about women navigating the worlds they’re trapped in — and the ones they build for themselves.
